There have been some truly outstanding samurai games over the years, and 2025 is already braced for Ghost of Yotei and Assassin's Creed Shadows to make their mark on the genre. However, a 23-year-old classic might be about to school them both. While we wait for Capcom to release Onimusha Way of the Sword next year, its reboot of the iconic samurai series, it's going to bless us with a remaster of the Resident Evil-like Onimusha 2, which will be out later this year.
While old Resident Evil games don't exactly sound like a logical basis for a slick samurai slice-'em-up, Onimusha 2 was an absolute triumph back in the day. With environmental clues, gloomy aesthetics, and a fixed camera perspective that would chop and change as you moved through each level, the influence of Capcom's iconic samurai game.
In a short teaser trailer, we don't get to see any real gameplay snapshots, but we do see some upscaled cinematics that show the 23-year-old game in a new light. We also get confirmation that it'll be available on Steam, following in the footsteps of the 2019 remaster Onimusha Warlords, the first game in the series. To give you a sense of just how good the remaster could be, Onimusha Warlords currently sits on a 93% rating on Steam.

The Onimusha 2 remaster is arriving "later in 2025," according to Capcom.
So, within a few months, there'll be two brilliant remasters waiting for you on Steam, which should keep you more than occupied ahead of the Onimusha Way of the Sword release date. Speaking of the reboot, plenty of new footage and details have been released by Capcom as well today.
The game's developers mainly discuss how it revolves around three core tenets: creating "compelling" characters like the new protagonist, immersing you in its dark recreation of Kyoto, and delivering "the ultimate sword fighting action."
